At
a well-attended lunch session, Chris Forinash of the
US EPA guided the audience through Smart
Growth projects being honored by the federal agency.
Nancy Douzinas of the Rauch Foundation presented on the
“Long
Island Index”, noting the impact the mere act of conducting
the comprehensive survey has already had on Long Islander's
awareness of key issues.
Ron
Stein, President of Vision Long Island reported on the
progress the region has made toward smarter growth practices
in the last year, posing specific challenges to municipalities
and developers. Draft
standards that will be used to gauge municipalities'
progress toward Smart Growth were released. Comments will
be accepted over the coming months, with the intention of
crafting a tool which will be used to evaluate local governments
in time for the 2005 Summit. Attendees were also given the
opportunity to submit their opinions of the best and worst
places on Long Island, and where the best opportunities
for Smart Growth exist.
A
key announcement came from Chris Jones of the Regional Planning
Association: RPA and Vision Long Island are commencing a
major effort that will result in a Long Island Regional
Visioning. This undertaking will build on past efforts,
aiming to bring all sectors of Long Island together to guide
growth and preservation over the next 20 years.
