December, 2003
Dear
Friend,
Thank
you for your participation in the 2003 Smart Growth Summit .
The event was an unprecedented success, drawing more than 500
people representing government, development, business, non-profit
and other Long Island leadership. Ten towns were represented,
with five Town Supervisors actively participating in our morning
plenary. Ten interactive workshops engaged participants in helping
build the solid foundation of facts, interests, and ideas that
will guide future development on Long Island.
We
are now working on the detailed follow-up document that will serve
as our action agenda in 2004. Major items emphasized
in our preliminary analysis include the need for:
Coordinated approaches to address obesity and other health issues
impacted by the way we structure
our
built environment
Improved coordination of transportation and land use policies
at Town and State levels
Recommendations to meet sewer and infrastructure needs
New approaches to public education on and marketing of affordable
housing
A serious proposal for regional planning and coordination of local
efforts
We
will be calling on you to help refine this agenda and to make
a solid investment in the future of Long Island. We are
now accepting nominations for our next major event, the 2004 Smart
Growth Awards. Nominations will be considered on the basis of
a broad matrix of Smart Growth criteria. Sponsorship
packages are available.
Your
leadership on Smart Growth supports of development that will be
economically, environmentally and socially viable, well into the
future. To request more information or discuss new opportunities
to get involved, please contact Eric Alexander at 631-261-0242.
Together, we are addressing Long Island's most critical issues,
increasing opportunities for Smart Growth Island-wide.
Thank
you for your time and attention. We look forward to hearing
from you.
Sincerely,

Eric Alexander
